George Mason to Henry Tazewell (July 16, 1779)

Cartwright's July 16th: 1779.
DEAR SIR
At this place I met with the Bearer Mr. Hardy, one of the Officers of the Letter of Marque Ship General Washington, just arrived at Alexandria, with a privateer Sloop prize from New York. Mr.
Hardy comes to Wmsburg. with the Lieutenant of the prize Sloop, in order to condemn her in our Court of Admiralty. I beg Leave to

recommend him to you, to conduct the Business in the Court of Admiralty, on Behalf of the Owners of the Ship General Washing-
ton, of whom I am one; & beg the Favour of you to do every thing necessary to expedite the Matter, & give Mr. Hardy all possible Dispatch; as he is anxious to return speedily to Alexandria, you will be pleased to advise him whether his Stay is necessary for the Condemnation of the Vessel, or the two Slaves taken in her. I am Dr. Sir Yr. most Huble Sert.

I hope the Government will give some orders imediatly, respecting the maintenance of the prisoners taken in the privateer Sloop; the Capt. & 22 men now living at the Charge of the owners of the Ship Genl. Washington.
